Carbon Diaries

  • 3.6 billion people (43% of world population) currently live in areas highly susceptible to climate change impacts.

  • More than 1 million species are at risk of extinction from climate change.

  • The 1.5°C limit, a key threshold in climate agreements was breached by the planet in 2023.

  • Oceans regulate Earth’s temperature and provide half of the Oxygen we breathe, yet they are the biggest victims of climate change.

  • Oceans store about 90% of excess heat from global warming and absorb 25% of human released CO2 causing acidification that damages marine life.

  • The ten warmest years on record have all occurred in the last ten years.

  • Between 2030 and 2050, climate change is expected to cause 250,000 deaths each year.

  • Pre-industrial atmospheric CO2 levels were around 220 parts per million. Currently, it sits at 420 parts per million, the highest in human history.

  • Global sea levels have risen roughly 20cm since 1900 and is expected to reach 30cm by 2050. This will cause more coastal flooding.

  • About 25% of emissions come from land clearing, agriculture and fertilizers.

  • The fashion industry is responsible for 10% of annual global carbon emissions.

  • Deforestation accounts for nearly 20% of global carbon emissions.

  • The Golden Toad is the first species to go extinct due to climate change.

  • By 2030, food prices worldwide could increase by 60% more due to increased weather events such as droughts and flooding caused by climate change.

  • In developing countries, women and girls are disproportionately impacted by climate change, making up 80% of displaced people and 79% of deaths during natural disasters.

Carbon Diaries is an independent knowledge platform exploring how carbon accounting can be applied to everyday systems. It examines the emissions associated with everyday living activities that people can directly relate to and interact with.

The aim of this platform is to provide a practical introduction to thinking about individual emissions in everyday life, allowing people to respond to the climate crisis at a personal level. Whether approaching the topic from a technical, practical, curious or general perspective, there is something here for every level of interest.
